A photographic enlarger, also known as a projection printer, is a tool used to create prints or negatives that are larger than the original transparency or negative. The projection assembly for the modern enlarger is mounted to a vertical column that is positioned on a horizontal base. The projection assembly contains a lens for projecting the picture onto the base (which supports the photosensitive printing paper), an enclosed illumination system, a holder for positioning and flattening the film, and a mechanism for concentrating the image onto the paper.
